The European
election of June 1999 was carried out over several days
in all 15 member states of the European Union. In
Northern Ireland, the election took place on 10 June, and
on 11 June in the Republic of Ireland. There are over 600
seats up for grabs in the European Parliament in
Bruxelles, Belgium with Ireland, as an island, accounting
for 18 of them. Northern Ireland constitutes a
constituency by itself, with the power to return 3
representatives. Although turnout in most of the United
Kingdom is very low in European Elections (around 30%),
it is higher in Northern Ireland (nearer 60%). This is
partly due to the fact that the issue of unification with
the Republic of Ireland inevitably comes up in the
campaign there. The Republic of Ireland itself is split
into 4 electoral constituencies with the power to return
15 candidates. Since the 1999 election took place more
or less simultaneously across Europe, we have merged the
Northern Ireland and Irish Republic results onto this one
page.
