for this scheme.
Gortin Road is a
local round running north from Omagh. It has
increased in importance over the past few years
due to (a) the completion of the Strathroy Road
link which provides a way to get from the A5
north-west of the town to the northern part of
the town without having to go into the town
centre and (b) Strule Shared Education Campus
which, although not yet well-developed, will
attract a lot more traffic into this area in the
future.
Gortin Road is
already four lanes wide for the first few
hundred metres between Sedan Avenue and Old
Mountfield Road DFI have decided to widen
a further 800 metres of the road to provide the
capacity needed. The work also includes an
outbound bus lane to Strathroy Road. The widened
road will feature 2+2 lanes from Old Mountfield
Road to the Education Campus (opposite the
Silver Birch Hotel). From there it will be one
lane inbound and two outbound (one of which will
be a bus lane) as far as Strathroy Road. A
shared foot/cycleway will also be provided along
the western side of the scheme. The extent of
the ugprade is shown in the image below (click
to enlarge):
The widening will
take place mostly on the western side by
encroaching on Grange Park. the photo below
shows the view north along Gortin Road from Old
Mountfield Road. As you can see, the widening
requires the removal of some trees along this
stretch.

Image from Google Street View – looking north
along Gortin Road in 2022, from just north of
Old Mountfield Road. The road will be widened
here by two lanes, by expanding on the left.
